Frequently asked questions

How do I check that a Jefferson Parish roofer or window contractor is licensed?

Search the contractor's name or license number on the LSLBC contractor search. Make sure the business name on your contract matches the licensed business and that the license covers the type of work you are hiring for.

Do I need a permit for a new roof or windows in Jefferson Parish?

Permit requirements are set locally. Many parishes and cities require permits for re-roofing and for replacing windows and exterior doors. Ask your contractor who will pull the permit, and check with the Jefferson Parish or city permit office.

What is a FORTIFIED Roof and can it lower my insurance?

FORTIFIED Roof is a voluntary re-roofing standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). Louisiana law requires insurers that file rates with the state to offer a premium reduction for homes built or retrofitted to FORTIFIED standards. Ask your insurer how it applies to your policy. See our FORTIFIED roof guide.

How do I avoid storm chasers after a hurricane?

Verify the license before you sign or pay, get itemized written estimates, avoid large down payments and never pay in full upfront. Our hiring guide covers the warning signs.
